1 Timothy

Chapter 3

  1. In reading this chapter it is clear that Paul is providing a pretty extensive description of what a church leader should look like. When one is called to that profession (or chooses that profession), it seems obvious of what kind of lifestyle they would live. Yet, in this letter it seems that there exists all kind of corruption amongst the overseers of the church, and Paul is trying to transform that. This definitely reminds me of several times where we hear of corruption in the church whether it is stealing money, covering up scandals, etc. We expect church leaders to be perfect - yet I think we have to remember that they are likely still experiencing some of the same struggles that we all experience. Just a thought.

  2. It also seems that Paul is pretty confident that your marriage paints a pretty accurate picture of your character... Josh how are we doing? ;-)

  3. Good points, Mary. While I agree that church leaders are no more perfect than anyone else, if they cannot prove themselves worthy to be an example to others and the onlooking world, they ought not to be in such a position. David was rebuked for His transgression (affair and murder) by God because he gave the gentiles good reason to blaspheme God. We've all seen it; some church leader is caught in some sort of scandal and the outside world is eager to point and declare that "religion" is corrupt. I can assure you God will punish such church leaders much greater than anyone else.

That being said, I think it's important to note that sin can be corrected when professed, turned from, and laid before the Lord. David tried to cover up his sin and was dealt harshly for it. It will be likewise for those who do the same.

No doubt, the way you handle your family is a direct reflection of your character. Though what your kids choose to do when grown and accountable for themselves is another matter. I'd like to think that we're doing well but this chapter is a sobering reminder to every parent of what is at stake. The world is watching Christians in their marriages and family life.

  4. Hello fellow bloggers/Gentiles, this is my first independent entry... woo hoo!!! I am LOL'ing Gentiles because I had to ask Joel what a Gentile was and of course I am a blonde Asian and he said we are Gentiles...oops was I not paying attention in three years of Bible class at Portland Christian?? Anyways, I thought the first 3 chapters in 1 Timothy were really good. It reminds us of what is expected of them as leaders like Mary said and that is good to have expectations set so that there is some accountability there. I feel sad when I hear of pastors that fall and have to leave their congregation. I know it saddens Jesus too. I think that God has grace for all of us and even those leaders who "sin" are definitely forgiven as long as their hearts are being true to our Lord. Josh do you mean that church leaders will be punished greater than anyone else even if they ask for forgiveness for the sins they commit? I was confused by that.

When I think of your family Josh and Mary I am so impressed with how much love and happiness I see in your home. I am sure there are many ups and downs, but looking from the outside I see two amazing people seeking after God as best as they can, training and loving on 3 beautiful kids. Does it get better than that in God's eyes, NO WAY!!! Love you both!!

  5. Josh did you mean that without repenting they will receive greater punishment? That's what I was understanding... It totally breaks my heart as well about fallen pastors - and priests. I don't really have to bring up the Catholic church, it is already there when you think about scandal in the church. And how many people turned away from God because of abuse experienced right in their own church. Talk about heart breaking.

Thanks Karyn - we felt like bad parents last night! We were totally sitting at the table, and not playing with the boys. Thank you for coming over and bringing them their own special dessert! They loved that!
It is a blast. I am beyond happy and feel so blessed and spoiled with our growing family. Even when Liam yells at me "Mom you don't tell me!" and I'm not really sure what I have told him... And even when Josiah informs me that I am reading incorrectly (which is often). They really are fun, and they are teaching us more than we are likely teaching them!
Hope you enjoy the rest of your week. See you Sunday or Monday!
    Mary

  6. Yes, sorry for not making myself more clear - like David who tried to cover up his error, God will punish those who do likewise. True repentence obviously leads us back into a relationship with God. Interestingly, David did eventually repent but God still took the child and trouble remained in the house of David until his death. God will deal much harder with those in leadership positions.

The part that gives me great comfort is that out of that entire ugly situation, Solomon was conceived who ended up being the next annointed King and in the line of Jesus Christ. So even in our error, God uses that to His glory. Something for all us Gentile parents to keep in mind.
